Skin Booster vs Profhilo vs Polynucleotides: Which One Does Your Skin Actually Need?

If you have searched for a skin booster in Mumbai lately, you have probably met three names again and again: skin boosters, Profhilo and polynucleotides, the so-called “salmon DNA” treatment. Clinics often use them as if they mean the same thing. They do not, and picking the wrong one is the most common reason people feel a booster “did nothing”.

The short answer: all three improve skin quality (hydration, texture and elasticity) rather than reshape your face. A classic hyaluronic acid skin booster suits dull, dehydrated skin. Profhilo suits early sagging and lost bounce. Polynucleotides suit thin, tired skin that needs repair, such as the under-eyes and neck.

Quick answer: which skin booster treatment fits your skin?

Pick by your main concern, not by the trend:

  • Dull, dry, dehydrated skin that has lost its glow: a classic hyaluronic acid skin booster.
  • Early sagging, fine lines and lost bounce on the face, neck or hands: Profhilo.
  • Thin, crinkled or tired skin (under-eyes, neck), or skin stressed by sun and pollution: polynucleotides.
  • Hollow cheeks, deep folds or strong frown lines: not a booster’s job. These need Botox or fillers, with a skin booster added afterwards for skin quality.

Not sure which group you fall into?

What is a skin booster, exactly?

“Skin booster” is an umbrella term for tiny injections placed in the skin itself to improve its quality: hydration, smoothness, elasticity and glow. Unlike filler, a skin booster does not add shape or volume. It will not lift a cheekbone, sharpen a jawline or fill a tear trough.

That is why the label confuses people. Profhilo and polynucleotides are both sold as skin boosters, yet they work very differently from a classic hyaluronic acid (HA) booster. So the useful question is not “should I get a skin booster?” but “which kind, and why?”

For Mumbai skin, the appeal is practical. Humidity, pollution, strong sun and all-day air-conditioning can leave skin dehydrated, uneven and dull, even with a good routine. A skin booster works inside the skin, which is where creams struggle to reach. Our page on skin booster treatment in Mumbai explains our approach. This guide helps you choose between the options.

How each skin booster treatment works

1. Classic hyaluronic acid skin booster: hydration from within

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a molecule that binds water. In a classic skin booster, stabilised HA (products such as Restylane Skinboosters or SKINVIVE belong to this group) is placed in tiny amounts across the skin. The result is a smoother, more hydrated, more even-looking surface.

Hydration usually improves within days to about two weeks. The collagen-building effect is generally milder than with Profhilo or polynucleotides, so this option works best when your main complaint is dullness and dryness. Most people need one to three sessions, then a repeat every few months.

2. Profhilo: bioremodelling for early laxity

Profhilo was developed by the pharmaceutical company IBSA and launched in India in December 2020. Each syringe holds 64 mg of pure hyaluronic acid. It is injected using the Bio Aesthetic Points (BAP) technique, which uses a set of fixed points on each side of the face so the product can spread through the skin layers instead of sitting in one spot.

Profhilo is not a filler and does not add volume. It hydrates, supports collagen and elastin, and gives skin a firmer, bouncier feel. It is used on the face, neck, hands and décolletage. The standard course is two sessions about four weeks apart, with peak results several weeks after the second session and a top-up after roughly six to nine months.

3. Polynucleotides: the repair-first “salmon DNA” treatment

Polynucleotides (PN) are purified DNA fragments, usually taken from salmon or trout. Despite the nickname, the injected product contains no sperm cells and only negligible fish protein. They are not hyaluronic acid at all. Instead, they prompt the skin’s fibroblasts, the cells that make collagen, to repair and rebuild.

That is why PN is popular for thin, crinkled skin such as the under-eyes and neck, and for skin that looks tired after sun, pollution or other procedures. Results build gradually rather than overnight. A typical course is two to four sessions, two to four weeks apart. Leading Indian aesthetic doctors now describe polynucleotides as a quiet favourite for natural-looking skin quality.

What does the evidence actually say?

We think you deserve the honest version. Small split-face studies, usually with 20 to 60 people followed for 12 to 24 weeks, generally find polynucleotides work as well as HA skin boosters. They rarely show that PN is clearly better. Long-term data beyond one year are essentially absent, and some studies involve the manufacturer.

So treat both options as well-liked, reasonably safe tools, not miracles. Results depend on your skin, your age, your sun exposure and who performs the treatment. At Panache, we choose by what your skin needs, not by what is trending.

Which skin booster does your skin actually need?

Your concern

Start with

Why

Dull, dehydrated, “tired” skin; you want glow before an event

Classic HA skin booster or Profhilo

Fast hydration and a smoother surface

Early sagging on cheeks or jawline skin, crepey neck, fine lines

Profhilo

Spreads across larger areas and supports collagen and elastin

Thin, crinkled under-eye skin

Polynucleotides

Gentle, repair-focused and suited to delicate areas

Skin stressed by sun, pollution or recent procedures

Polynucleotides

Supports the skin’s own repair process

Rough texture with dullness

Skin booster plus a resurfacing treatment

Resurfacing smooths the surface; the booster hydrates and supports it

Pigmentation, melasma or dark acne marks

Treat the pigment first

Boosters improve skin quality but do not treat pigment; see our hyperpigmentation treatment

Hollow cheeks, deep folds, strong frown lines

Fillers or Botox first

These concerns involve volume or muscle movement, not skin quality

Dark circles deserve a note. Circles caused by thin skin often respond well to polynucleotides, but circles caused by pigmentation or hollows need a different approach. A proper assessment tells the difference.

Does age matter?

Age is a rough guide, not a rule. Skin type, sun exposure and lifestyle matter more.

  • 20s to early 30s: a classic skin booster for dehydration and dullness. You do not need one “to prevent ageing”.
  • Mid-30s to 40s: Profhilo or polynucleotides as elasticity falls and fine lines settle in.
  • 45 and above: usually a combined plan, with boosters for skin quality alongside Botox, fillers or lifting treatments for structure.

Can you combine a skin booster with Profhilo, Botox or fillers?

Yes, and many good plans do. The logic is simple: each treatment fixes a different layer of ageing.

  • Structure first, skin quality second. Filler restores shape and volume; a skin booster then improves the skin covering it. Neither can do the other’s job. Our page on Botox and filler treatment in Mumbai covers the structural side.
  • Profhilo plus polynucleotides. Some clinicians combine the two: Profhilo for quick surface bounce, polynucleotides for deeper skin quality over time.
  • Booster plus Botox. Botox softens lines caused by muscle movement. A booster improves the skin itself. Together they cover both causes.
  • Booster plus resurfacing. Peels, HydraFacial or Korean skin treatments can be paired with a booster to improve glow and texture. Spacing matters, so your doctor will sequence them to avoid over-treating your skin.

These combinations sit best inside a wider plan. Our anti aging treatment in Mumbai page shows how boosters, Botox, fillers and IPL fit together. If you are planning more than one treatment, ask for a sequenced plan at your first visit.

What to expect from a skin booster: session, downtime and aftercare

Your session, step by step

  1. Consultation. Your doctor reviews your skin, medical history, medicines, allergies, goals and any event dates.
  2. Preparation. The skin is cleaned and a numbing cream is applied.
  3. Treatment. The product is placed through tiny injections at several points. Most sessions take under an hour.
  4. Aftercare briefing. You leave with clear instructions and a follow-up plan.

Downtime

There is little to none. Small bumps at the injection points, redness, tenderness and occasional bruising are common. Redness and swelling usually settle within one to two days, and the small bumps fade within hours to a few days. Many people return to work the same day.

Aftercare that protects your results

  • Avoid heavy workouts, alcohol, saunas and steam for the first 24 hours.
  • Skip makeup for about 12 hours, and avoid facials, peels and lasers for around two weeks unless your doctor says otherwise.
  • Use sunscreen daily. UV exposure continues through Mumbai’s monsoon, and sun damage undoes the work.
  • Tell your doctor beforehand about blood thinners or anti-inflammatory medicines. Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Timing your treatment before an event

Work backwards from your date. As a rule of thumb, allow about 8 to 10 weeks for a Profhilo course, 8 to 12 weeks for polynucleotides, and 4 to 6 weeks for a classic skin booster. Festive and wedding seasons book up fast, so enquire early. Your doctor will confirm the exact timeline for your skin.

Who should avoid a skin booster, and what are the risks?

Skin boosters are generally well tolerated when a trained doctor performs them with good technique. They are not right for everyone, though.

Wait or avoid if you:

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding, because safety data are lacking and doctors advise waiting
  • have an active infection, acne flare, cold sore or inflamed skin in the treatment area
  • are allergic to hyaluronic acid or the numbing agent used
  • have a fish or shellfish allergy (this rules out polynucleotides)

Discuss with your doctor first if you:

  • have an autoimmune condition, a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners
  • tend to form keloid or thick scars
  • had another procedure in the same area recently

Possible side effects

Common and temporary: small bumps, redness, swelling, tenderness and bruising. Less common: swelling that lasts longer, a cold sore or acne flare. Rare but serious: infection, nodules, vascular injury, or an allergic reaction that can appear even months later with products containing hyaluronic acid.

Most serious events are linked to the injection procedure rather than the ingredient. That is why the person holding the syringe matters more than the brand name on the box.

How to choose a skin booster clinic in Mumbai: 7 checks

The injectable matters less than the clinic behind it. Before you pay for any skin booster, check these seven things.

  1. A doctor-led consultation. Someone should assess your skin, history and goals before recommending anything. A sales counter is not a consultation.
  2. Product transparency. Ask which brand is used and to see the sealed syringe and batch details before it is opened.
  3. A reason for the recommendation. A good doctor explains why this booster suits your skin and why another does not.
  4. Honest limits. Be cautious of any clinic that promises a booster will lift your jawline or erase pigmentation.
  5. A written plan. You should know the number of sessions, the gaps between them, the areas and the cost before you start.
  6. Aftercare and follow-up. Expect written instructions and a number you can call if something worries you.
  7. Proven experience. Ask who will inject, how often they perform the treatment, and read recent patient reviews.

Our companion guide to anti aging solutions lists more things to check before you commit to any clinic. Feel free to use these checks on us too.

Skin booster FAQs

What is a skin booster, and is it the same as filler?

A skin booster is a set of tiny injections that improve skin quality: hydration, texture, elasticity and glow. It is not the same as filler. Filler adds volume and shape, while a skin booster works on the skin itself and cannot lift cheeks or fill deep folds. Many people use both.

Neither is better for everyone. Profhilo is hydration-led with some collagen support and tends to give faster surface results. Polynucleotides are repair-led and build more slowly. Studies so far show polynucleotides performing about as well as HA boosters, not clearly better. Your doctor chooses based on your skin.

They are purified DNA fragments, usually from salmon or trout. The injected product contains no sperm cells and only negligible fish protein. Side effects are usually mild and temporary when a trained doctor performs the treatment. They are not suitable with a fish or shellfish allergy, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

It depends on the product. A classic HA skin booster usually needs one to three sessions. Profhilo is usually two sessions about four weeks apart. Polynucleotides are usually two to four sessions, two to four weeks apart. Maintenance sessions follow.

A classic HA skin booster lasts about six months. Profhilo lasts about six to nine months, and up to 12 in some people. Polynucleotides last about six to twelve months. Results are not permanent, and age, skin type, sun exposure and lifestyle all change how long they last.

Numbing cream keeps most people comfortable, and you feel pinpricks rather than pain. Downtime is minimal. Small bumps, redness and bruising usually settle within hours to a few days. Avoid heavy workouts, alcohol and saunas for 24 hours.

Yes. A skin booster improves skin quality in anyone. Your doctor adapts the plan to your skin thickness, concerns and goals.
